What is 1868 Legacy?
1868 Legacy is a heritage-inspired lifestyle brand rooted in history, family lineage, and intentional design. Each collection reflects a commitment to timeless style, quiet confidence, and honoring where we come from while designing for the present and future.
The brand is grounded in the belief that legacy is more than what we inherit—it is what we protect, embody, and pass forward.

1868 represents more than a year—it marks a defining moment in American history.
In 1868, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, establishing citizenship, due process, and equal protection under the law for all persons born or naturalized in the United States. While born out of the post–Civil War effort to secure rights for formerly enslaved people, its language was intentionally universal—reshaping the meaning of citizenship and laying a constitutional foundation that would later be applied to immigrants, women, and other groups seeking equal protection under the law. Though it did not itself guarantee the right to vote, it set the framework upon which voting rights would be claimed, contested, and expanded.
That same year, the 1868 presidential election became the first national election in which many newly freed Black men voted on a wide scale, particularly in Reconstruction states where federal authority helped enforce voter participation. Their participation marked a pivotal shift—affirming the vote as a powerful expression of citizenship, self-determination, and collective voice.
The year 1868 also holds deep significance for institutions and communities committed to education, civic engagement, and advancement, including the founding of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute during the Reconstruction era.
Today, as voting rights and civic participation continue to face renewed challenge, 1868 Legacy stands as a reminder that progress is not permanent. Rights must be protected, and legacy requires care. Inspired by this enduring moment—when recognition, protection, and possibility were written into the fabric of the nation—the brand reflects the belief that legacy is not only inherited, but intentionally carried forward through purpose, community, and design.

1868 Legacy is an independent brand that celebrates the heritage and culture of institutions and communities. It is not officially affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any educational institution beyond the founder’s alumna status.
